After another successful shoplifting spree, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold and invite her home with them. Osamu’s wife Nobuyo reluctantly agrees to shelter her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although poor, the family seem to live happily together until an accident upsets the delicate balance they have created, revealing long-buried secrets. Kore-eda has a genius for finding the humanity in the ordinary and compassion for the flawed. The acting from the ensemble cast is outstanding.
