In the early fifties, King Seretse Khama of Botswana Oyelowo), while at University in London, falls in love with and marries Ruth Williams(Pike) , a working class London girl.
The marriage outrages the British Colonial establishment and also the tribal elders in Botswana in equal measure. Both parties plan in their separate ways to destroy the marriage.
